Now in its sixth year, the BSN Brilliant Book award highlights a selection of the best new fiction titles for students at school. From a longlist submitted by staff, students and reading enthusiasts, titles chosen for 11+ students included Runaway Robot by Frank Cottrell Bryce; Orphans of the Tide by Struan Murray; The Time of Green Magic by Hilary MacKay and After the War by Tom Palmer. For 12 years + readers, titles submitted included The Good Hawk by Joseph Elliott; Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo; The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein; Girl, Boy, Sea by Chris Vick and The Last Paper Crane by Kerry Drewery. Whilst reading, I was catapulted into worlds of imagination and drama that are astounding in their depth. Authors choose their words with flair and purpose, colouring their characters with wisdom, daring and kindness. In ‘Girl, Boy, Sea’ I could positively feel the ebb and flow of the tide as I read about the boat bobbing up and down on the waves. I could sense the magic to be found in the story by Hilary McKay and I was intrigued by the real story behind the Enigma Game and spent a happy couple of hours browsing links given at the end of the book. There is so much good fiction around but the final winners were ‘The Good Hawk’ and ‘The Last Paper Crane’, exciting and innovative stories by incredibly gifted authors . If you get the chance to read them, let us know what you think.
